Interactive modeling of implicit surfaces using a direct visualization approach with signed distance functions

چکیده
Modeling appealing virtual scenes is an elaborate and time-consuming task, requiring not only training and experience, but also powerful modeling tools providing the desired functionality to the user. In this paper, we describe a modeling approach using signed distance functions as an underlying representation for objects, handling both conventional and complex surface manipulations. Scenes defined by signed distance functions can be stored compactly and rendered directly in real-time using sphere tracing. Hence, we are capable of providing an interactive application with immediate visual feedback for the artist, which is a crucial factor for the modeling process. Moreover, dealing with underlying mathematical operations is not necessary on the user level. We show that fundamental aspects of traditional modeling can be directly transferred to this novel kind of environment, resulting in an intuitive application behavior, and describe modeling operations which naturally benefit from implicit representations. We show modeling examples where signed distance functions are superior to explicit representations, but discuss the limitations of this approach as well. & 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Interactive tools for shape modeling with hierarchical implicit surfaces have been limited both by the high computational cost of visualization, and the lack of techniques for direct surface manipulation. To address the visualization issue, Hierarchical Spatial Caching is developed. This novel technique combines caching and spatial approximation to accelerate queries of the functional model tre...
متن کاملInteractive Visualization of Non-Manifold Implicit Surfaces Using Pre-Integrated Volume Rendering
We present an interactive method of visualizing both manifold and non-manifold implicit surfaces. The implicit surfaces are directly visualized at interactive frame rates independent of surface complexity by the hardwareaccelerated volume rendering method. Although conventional implicit surfaces can represent only two-manifold surfaces, we have developed a technique of representing non-manifold...
متن کاملDistance to objects built with set operations in constructive solid modeling
We present in this paper methods to compute the signed Euclidean distance to surfaces obtained by the intersection (respectively union or difference) of two solids (in two or three dimensions). These implementations can replace min/max or R-functions traditionally used to model set operations used with implicit surfaces.
متن کاملMorse Theory for Implicit Surface Modeling
Morse theory describes the relationship between a function's critical points and the homotopy type of the function's domain. The theorems of Morse theory were developed speci cally for functions on a manifold. This work adapts these theorems for use with parameterized families of implicit surfaces in computer graphics. The result is a theoretical basis for the determination of the global topolo...
متن کاملDynamic Implicit Solids with Constraints for Haptic Sculptin
In this paper we present a novel, interactive shape modeling technique: Dynamic Implicit Solid Modeling, which unifies volumetric implicit functions and powerful physics-based modeling. Although implicit functions are extremely powerful in graphics, geometric design, and shape modeling, the full potential of implicit functions is yet to be fully realized due to the lack of flexible and interact...
